Getting up to Speed with Indexes in SQL Server
Getting a query to work is one object, but getting a query to work rapidly when the clients are piling up is another. An Index is a way that any DBMS uses to access data quickly, think about a book which consists of more then 5000 pages and some one asks you to find some particular topic or word, why you would turn to index? The index in the book is very similar to what a DBMS Index does. In a book you find the page number of that particular topic and in case of database you find a pointer (a physical storage address) of that particular record(s) which contains that data.

Poor use of indexes is doubtless the single most important cause of performance problem. An index is a small sorted list that points to the main data. Finding a particular record is then quicker because only the small index list has to be searched.

Secure options for remote SQL Server administration
Just like Windows Server, SQL Server can be administered directly on the computer to which it's installed or from a remote computer. One common remote-administration technique is to use SQL Server Enterprise Manager, which can connect to a remote SQL Server via TCP/IP, named pipes or other network protocols. However, this tool requires that SQL Server be made accessible across a network -- typically a security hazard. If the network is closed (LAN), the danger isn't as great since it's not as easy to mount an attack from the outside. But if users outside the local network need to perform administrative work, things get complicated.

So what are your options for giving administrative access to people outside your local network? The answer will depend on your network topology, your SQL Server needs and how much administrative work is being done.

Book review: Oracle SQL*Plus
SQL*Plus is the command-line interface to the Oracle database server (though there are variants that let you, for instance, run Oracle commands via a browser interface instead of in a text-based window). This book is part tutorial, part reference volume for the various implementations of SQL*Plus, describing how to use not just the command line itself but also Oracle's version of the SQL language.

The first three chapters cover the SQL*Plus tool and the iSQL*Plus browser-based interface – how to run it, saving and retrieving buffers, running scripts and so on. From chapter four the narrative switches to a tutorial of the SQL query language, with the next three chapters concentrating on how you extract data for reporting purposes. Chapter eight covers scripting (writing generic commands that you can re-use), then chapter nine moves on to look at one of the most common uses of command-line scripting – loading and extracting large hunks of data.
