10.08.09 Survey Puts Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL In Tight Race By Doug CaverlyWhen it comes to relational database systems in emerging markets, Microsoft SQL Server is king, according to the results of a new survey. MySQL might be characterized as the prince who's just a heartbeat away from the throne, though. Evans Data Corp contacted more than 400 developers in China, Eastern Europe, India, and Latin America. It reported afterwards in a press release, "Over 50% of developers in the emerging market countries claim to be using Microsoft's version of SQL Server," which is obviously enough to give Microsoft's offering a win. But here are a couple of important footnotes: 46% of Evans Data Corp's respondents said that they use MySQL, and while Microsoft SQL has the lead in China, MySQL is ahead in India.
We'll let you decide whether to cheer for Microsoft or the open source community; different people will perhaps see different advantages to either side achieving absolute victory. And things appear to be so close that an objective individual could have trouble picking a winner. Still, as long as the competition is so close, both sides will have to stay competitive, which should result in positive effects for SQL users of all stripes.
