Microsoft Answers Calls For SQL Server 2005 Service Pack

By Doug Caverly

Your wish is - at least in this one instance - Microsoft's command. The company has listened to requests for another service pack for SQL Server 2005, and in response, has decided to put something out in the fourth quarter of this year.

Matthias Berndt, a group program manager at Microsoft, announced this move in a short official blog post. Otherwise, he wrote, "Based on current support volume as well as the fact that SQL Server 2005 will enter into extended support on 4/13/2011 we anticipate this to be the last Service Pack release for this SQL Server version."

Berndt then continued, "Extended support for SQL Server 2005 will be available through 4/12/2016. . . . As always, the SQL Server team will carefully monitor customer feedback as well as support volume to re-assess our decisions based on your needs."

And that's about all that anyone knows. The only other detail Microsoft's decided to share is the release's codename: Denali.

We'll see where this goes. It's nice Microsoft's answered users' requests on this issue, at least. Perhaps Microsoft and the SQL community will enjoy a better relationship in the future as a result.
