Microsoft Enters MySQL Space With Express

SQL Server Express may represent a typical Microsoft entry into a segment where a free non-Microsoft product holds a dominant position.
MySQL, billed as the most popular open source database in the world, has the respect of thousands of developers, and has been implemented in places like NASA and Yahoo. But there are thousands of developers who work in Visual Studio, and Express will be familiar in feel to them.
Express was designed to fulfill two potential uses. One would be as a database server to support web applications. Another would be as a local data store independent from network availability.
Microsoft likely hopes development on the free platform will lead to sales of the commercial versions of SQL Server, to better support those home-grown applications in an enterprise.
