DDoS Attacks Pass SQL Injections As Top Threat

SQL professionals may soon start seeing a decrease in the number of suspicious looks they receive. A new report from Trustwave indicates that distributed denial of service attacks have passed SQL injections to become the top threat most organizations face.

Trustwave used to consider SQL injections the top threat, perhaps earning SQL specialists a bit of notoriety. Consider how all sorts of people associated with the petroleum industry faced greater scrutiny following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Now that DDoS attacks are receiving worse press (favored as a hacking technique over SQL injections 32 percent to 21 percent), any negative associations may fade a little.

They may fade without eliminating the demand for SQL professionals, too, since Trustwave found that government organizations and retailers still see a lot of SQL injection attacks.

But here's the main thing Trustwave said in a statement: "DDoS as an attack vector and notable trend for the second half of 2010 was successful in disrupting commerce and bringing down websites of large businesses and associations. Denial of service attacks jumped to the number one attack vector, up 22 percent, as compared to the first half of 2010."

Later, the statement also hinted that DDoS attacks will continue to be a big problem, adding, "Our study found that most businesses wrongly assume that network hardware will stop DDoS attacks, or believe their website will not be targeted by such attacks. But the increase in this attack vector proves that businesses, both large and small, should test their website limitations to better understand how their applications will respond to such an attack."
